The History of The Booker T. Washington Alumni Foundation

of Shreveport, Louisiana

The Booker T. Washington High School Alumni rallied together to promote, preserve and protect the undaunted legacy of Booker T. Washington High School so our beloved Booker T. Washington High School would not be closed. Alumni   Representatives from as many classes as possible were called by Mrs. Abdul-Rahman and Mrs. Crawford.  The Class Reunion Chairpersons and Class Representatives of the various classes were asked to attend a meeting to discuss the formation of a coalition of Booker T. Washington High School Alumni.

Eager Alumni from the Class of 1950 (the first graduating class of BTW High School) and from the graduating Classes of the 50’s, 60’s 70’s and 80’s met to form and organize the coalition of Alumni. The organization was initially called The Booker T. Washington High School Alumni. In 1990, the Alumni elected Mrs. Tahira Abdul-Rahman to serve as the Chairperson of the group. Tahira served untiringly for 7 years during the formative years of the organization. After the Foundation was incorporated as a 501 (C) (3) Non-Profit organization the Chairperson’s Title was changed to President. After Tahira’s term of office, Attorney Carl Franklin served diligently as President from 1997 to 1999. In 1999 Dr. G. Jean Nichols was elected to serve as President.  Dr. Nichols served as President of the Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Foundation until 2012. Under Dr. Nichols dedicated service and tenure alumni continued to provide scholarships every year to high school seniors and coordinated in 2000 the 50th Year Celebration of the birth of Booker T .Washington High School.

Booker T. Washington High School Alumni and Friends of Booker T. Washington High School rallied together to structure  the organization  to insure that the undaunted legacy of Booker T. Washington High School remained alive and well.  This has truly been a team effort with all Alumni sharing their talents, time and treasure for the good of our Alma Mata. The Presidents, Officers, Committee Chairpersons, Committee Members, The General Membership Body and Friends of BTWHS Alumni Foundation have all worked tirelessly to maintain the undaunted legacy of Booker T. Washington High School. None of the Presidents of the Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Foundation could have been successful without the help and support of all Alumni and Friends of Booker T. Washington High School that have volunteered to serve in many capacities.
One of the first major activities that the Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Foundation had was a Celebration of Homecoming Activities in 1990. All Booker T Washington High School Alumni were asked to come Home to celebrate our school and rejuvenate our commitment to Booker T. Washington High School. The Celebration was a huge success! Dr. Leonard C. Barnes served as the guest speaker at our first Banquet. The Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Foundation also established a Hall of Fame to recognize Alumni that have made outstanding contributions in their career, to their community and to Booker T. Washington High School.

Under the  leadership of  the well-known Educator and Principal Dr. Horace J. Maxile, Sr. The Booker T.  Washington High School Alumni Foundation was born. The Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Foundation was founded in 1990 after Dr. Maxile, Sr., Mrs. Johnnie Crawford, and Mrs. Tahira Abdul-Rahman met and talked about forming a coalition of Booker T. Washington High School Alumni from all classes  that would work together to support our Alma Mata.  During the 80’s and 90’s, there were rumors that Booker T. Washington High School would be closed as a high school.

In 2012 Tahira Abdul-Rahman was again elected to lead the organization. During her tenure another successful Booker T. Washington High School All Class Reunion was held in 2014. Booker T Washington High School was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015 through efforts initiated by Booker T .Washington High School Alumni and The Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Foundation.

Also the historic Civil Rights Parade recognizing the contributions of Booker T. Washington High School students to the Civil Rights Movement in 1964 was established in 2014 during her tenure. In 2016 Frederick Henson was elected to serve as President of the Alumni Foundation where he has continued to keep the legacy of Booker T. Washington High School alive.

The Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Foundation has raised money to provide scholarships for seniors, to pay for educational equipment and books, to purchase athletic equipment, Cheerleader outfits, The Lion Mascot uniform, Athletic shoes and uniforms. The Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Foundation has contributed to the purchase of band uniforms and paid for tutoring instructors to help prepare our BTW students for the ACT Test and served as Tutors for the students.   The Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Foundation has contributed funds to pay for transportation for students to attend Academic and Band Competitions.  Many of the seniors at that time were awarded College Scholarships because they were able to attend and compete at the various band and academic rallies.

The Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Foundation has worked with the Principals, Administrators and Teachers of the School to support them as they enthusiastically work to help our students at Booker T. Washington High School succeed. The Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Foundation serves as an advocate for our students and our Alma Mata.
